Honda S2000 The Honda S2000 is something of a revalation. It's engine is without doubt it's most exciting feature. It's the only car I've driven where the rev counter becomes a target not a limit. The noise is simply sensational and although the torque is modest acceleration is very rapid. The extended rev range means this car can equal machines that on paper should be much quicker. An S2000 regularly fielded in Sprints in the South East is very nearly as quick and often quicker than most of the cars in the OVER 2 litre class. For example 911's, M3 Coupes and TVR's. It owes its speed to comparatively light weight and excellent handling and high outright grip levels. Very underrated by the press it seems strange this car is not a more common sight on the roads as it offers a package of handling, looks, grip, poise and sheer shrills unmatched at the price. Granted if for some strange reason you prefer diesel torque to revs you probably won't like it. More than likely though you already own one so you get the drift..! Motorsport & Trackday Use To put the performance of the S2000 into perspective in Sprints it typically is on a par with cars in the class above. It's horsepower output would cost the best part of £10,000 to acheive reliably from any other makers 2 litre engine. When you can get the whole car for less than this it's incredibly good value. We expect more and more S2000's will find their way onto circuits. However we expect many series will put them up a class such is their performance advantage in the under 2 litre class. In fact personally I wouldn't mind if they did - last time the Peugeot 205 project car competed against one (both cars completely unmodifed) it was over 10 seconds slower at a Goodwood sprint. In fact the 205 will need to be in virtually full race spec to compete with a standard S2000. Perhaps it will be our next project car? As the engine is so good money is best spent on brakes and handling. The mod's we've found that work on the S2000 are as follows:, Whiteline ARB's together with Tein and Nitron Coilovers for suspension. For braking we recommend either EBC Yellow Stuff or Ferodo DS2500 pads combined with EBC Plain or Turbo Groove discs. |
