Changing an exhaust system for one with less back pressure can produce more horsepower. This is especially the case on a turbo engined car which like two stroke bikes, live and die by the exhaust. Another engine that lives and dies by the exhaust is one with a lot of valve lift at TDC (or Overlap) There is always noise to consider, not just for the road but at circuits to. Many circuits have quite stringent noise tests in place. You will not want a single box race system for a trackday at Goodwood for instance.
There are many different exhausts on the market. In fact the choice is bewildering. In keeping with our philosophy we will not sell exhausts where the manufacturer is not confident in their ability to increase HP. Bolting on massive diameter tubing and huge tailpipes can possibly even lose horsepower (except perhaps on a turbo where this seems to be the norm) because the exhaust gasses lose temperature and hence reduce in speed. The system itself is actually not as important in generating power as the manifold. The exhaust manifold on a standard car is a design compromise. Usually cast iron, they often flow well but when you start upgrading, especially with a high performance camshaft, they become a weak link in the chain. The tubular manifold not only looks the part it is designed to “extract” the waste gases through pulse tuning. There is a lot of science behind this. It is to do with gas dynamics and a cleverly designed manifold will give a good increase in power as standard and enable a performance camshaft to really reach it's potential. By extracting the waste gases there is more room for fresh air and fuel resulting in more efficient combusition. This can give more torque and hence more power.
